Nigeria Livelihoods Project (Feed the Future)
This activity is based in rural communities in Northern Nigeria’s Sokoto and Kebbi states, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The activity adopts a multi-sector approach that will help 42,000 very poor households (HHs) increase their agriculture production and incomes and also improve the nutrition of children. To help the extremely vulnerable families move along a pathway to prosperity, the activity will implement a cash transfer program to provide the first step in overcoming barriers to income-generating activities, as well as a community literacy and numeracy program to equip benefitting households with the skills to understand simple agricultural texts and information for business. To introduce the community literacy and numeracy component, a community literacy mapping has identified key relevant government agencies with the mandate to provide out-of-school and non-formal education system in Nigeria which are: the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education (NMEC), the State Agency for Mass Education (SAME) and the local government Adult Education Area Coordinating Unit. This activity conducts community sensitization and enrolment drive of male and female youth, age 10–30, for participation in a learning opportunities in basic literacy and numeracy skills. In all, 20 educators/mentors and 480 local facilitators will be engaged to handle 480 learning centers across activity locations.
