Severe to Profound Intellectual Disability: Circles of Care and Education
The vast majority of children with intellectual disability (ID) are characterized at mild or moderate levels. In the U.S., it has been recognized that about 2% of children have ID and only about 0.2% of those are at severe and profound levels. Frequently, these children have additional disabilities. They typically require extensive curriculum and instructional adaptation and are most likely to be excluded from inclusive and even special schools. With highly trained teachers and extensive support, research has documented that these children can make appropriate progress in inclusive settings.
