Afghanistan's Global Partnership for Education Program (GPE)
USAID is one of the contributing donors to GPE, a multi-donor funded initiative that promotes the efforts of recipient national governments towards achievement of Education for All (EFA) goals. GPE in Afghanistan focuses on increasing and sustaining equitable access to quality education in 40 districts in 13 provinces. The selected districts are characterized by challenges related to access (rural and remote); security (kinetic areas); education achievement indicators (particularly in relation to gender); and conservative social attitudes. UNICEF, as GPE's supervisory entity, provides operational support to the Ministry of Education to develop and update their operational rolling plan and monitoring framework. UNICEF also ensures oversight to strengthen reporting and monitoring mechanisms at district, provincial and national levels and conducts external auditing of the GPE activity.
